Leveraging Our Past to Enable Your Future

By Rob Armstrong –

As the saying goes; the more things change, the more they stay the same. Those of us fortunate enough to be in the data and analytic field over the past few decades certainly know that is true. While there has been a large change in the data types, data volume and velocity, and a myriad of tools and algorithms for analytics, it is also true that the ultimate goal of the business has not changed. Users still need to be able to interrogate data from all across their enterprise to make timely and relevant actions to drive their business metrics. The challenge has gotten ever more complex with the advent of the “big data” and “cloud computing”.

The good news is that Teradata has always been at the forefront of enabling analytics with solid data management and system integration practices and it is that legacy of world class solutions that are being taken to the next level with the environment we call “Borderless Analytics”. image of vista over mountains, explorer

A Trip Down Memory Lane

A quick trip through history allows understanding to where we’ve been, and how that experience takes you to where you want to go. Long ago companies had many silos of data in data marts and isolated systems it was hard to get consistent and insightful analytics. Because the data was mainly relational and largely internal to the company it made sense to create an integrated repository of data that removed the barriers and gave users a “single view of the truth”. For better or worse we called this a “centralized data warehouse”.

The important point is that by providing the scale, data management, and a sophisticated optimizer, Teradata allowed the users to move beyond the siloes and departmental reports to a truly data driven world of analytics and action. In essence we physically removed the “borders” that disrupted analytic and user agility.

Fast Forward A Few Years

Jumping to the just a few years ago, new data types and analytic processing challenged the centralized data warehouse because now data was either not structured or not of high value to justify the IT requirements to integrate the data into a cohesive relational model. Yet the users were now used to having free access to data across the enterprise and expected this new data to be integrated into the analytic mix.

Given the realities of the data and needs, new processing paradigms were necessary. Lower cost platforms, different file system and data structures met the need from a technology standpoint but many companies recreated the silos and data islands of the past. New barriers and borders are being created that inhibit user analytics.

Full Speed Ahead – to a Single Analytic Environment

This time Teradata has risen to the challenge and understanding the new tools available to us, we have logically removed the borders to allow an entire data ecosystem be seen as a single analytical environment by the end user. The two major parts of this capability are Teradata Unity™ and Teradata QueryGrid™.

Teradata Unity addresses the coordination and management of Teradata platforms, whether they are on premises, in a private cloud managed by Teradata, or on a public cloud provided by our partners. Unity allows for data consistency with dual loads and SQL Multicast processes. This ensures that users can access their data from multiple points to provide higher service levels and resource optimization to meet peak demands. Unity will also manage the routing of queries based on rules and handle the automatic re-routing of queries in case of platform restarts.

Teradata QueryGrid manages the other aspect of analytic freedom, the ability to run a query that requires data from multiple heterogeneous platforms and integrating the query process to maximize performance. This gives the user easy access to a wide range of data and analytics without having to involve IT to constantly move and manage data.

Taken together these two powerful tools unleash the data, and more importantly, they unleash the users. They provide an analytic environment to give greater analytic capability with lower IT processes and cost. Borderless Analytics gives your company the power to explore new avenues of insight and act quickly to drive higher business value.
